Going For The Gold: Bread

Catering to teenage girls in mini-skirts carrying pink-papered diaries, Bread churned out a dozen hit songs before their freshness date expired in 1976. Of those that came from the bakery of David Gates and company, just two proved to be worthy of Gold status.

Their first Gold single was their first hit single, the lightweight love song, “Make It With You.” Composed by Gates, along with bandmates Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer, “Make It With You” was released in July of 1970 and spent 13 weeks on the charts. It spent a week at Number 1 and was certified Gold just a few months later.

More gentle-voiced ’70s pop was to follow — including “It Don’t Matter to Me” and “If” — before the band scored another Gold record a year and a half later. This time around, the winner was a Gates-only composition (and production), the similarly soft “Baby I’m-A Want You.” Living on the charts for 10 weeks, with a peak position of Number 3, the record took just three months to be certified Gold.
