Mother’s Day is right around the corner and if you are like most people, you may find shopping for Mom a wee bit stressful. Moms are usually one of the most important people in your life but can be one of the hardest people to shop for. It can be a challenge buying something for the person who gave you life, nurtured you, and helped mold you into the person you are today.

Over the past few months we asked lots of different Moms what their favorite gifts have been through the years. Find out what still warms Moms heart (some seven years later) and what was so outrageous that the Mom should have sent her gift giver to time out.

“For my first Mother’s Day, my husband downloaded pictures of me and my daughter, as well as other important women in my family and made me a Mother’s Day card. I was speechless for two reasons. First, my husband is a man of few words, but he took the initiative to create a gift that was thoughtful and beautiful. Second, one of my fears as a new parent was that I’d never be able to fill my mother’s shoes. His card let me know that I didn’t have to worry. In the four years since, no gift has topped this one.”

“As Mother’s Day approaches, I have decided to be very pointed in my hint dropping. I have circled jewelry in flyers, made a “mom’s wish list” and posted it on the refrigerator. I also told my husband that I do NOT want household appliances. I have learned over several years of being married, that husbands can be very literal. If you say “we need a new vacuum”, don’t be surprised if on the next holiday, that is exactly what you get. Case in point, one year I complained about puppy hair in the carpet and that our living room needed better lighting. My husband was so proud of himself as he carried two large boxes in the house a few days before Mother’s Day. I must admit that my excitement built over the next few days. I have no idea what I was expecting but the fact that he was so proud of himself made me believe that I was about to receive the surprise of my life. Needless to say, that euphoric feeling was quickly dashed as I opened my steam cleaner and touch lamp!!!!!!! Although I was gracious and smiled, said my thank yous, I must admit that I felt like a maid getting new cleaning equipment. I didn’t feel like I received a gift that showed he sympathized with my 19 hours of labor. I felt like a got something that his mother would appreciate. So, word to wise: Ladies, don’t try to be sly or mysterious…. Tell him what you want!”

Gift tip for a Mom who knows what she wants: Don’t ask us, ask her! She will be sure to tell you exactly what she wants!

Mom – Chelsea Wilkey

“My favorite Mother’s Day gift is a black fresh water pearl necklace that I received for my first Mother’s Day. I had my eye on this necklace for a while and was completely surprised when my boyfriend and daughter gave it to me. It goes with everything and I still love it to this day.”

Mom – Kathleen Potter Wooldridge

“Every time I saw my daughter light up a cigarette my heart broke. She was raised in a smoke free home, and was completely aware of my feelings about smoking. It felt like a slap in the face every time she smoked in front of me. I was hurt as well as concerned about her health. Three years ago, I received a simple card that said she had given up the habit, and would pay one month’s car payment for me if she smoked again. So far, so good!”

“In 2002 my children presented me with the usual handmade cards and breakfast in bed followed by lots of hugs and a chorus of, “we love you Mom”. Then my kids presented me with a ready to plant rosebush. I love roses and they had put such thought into something for me to enjoy, I was touched. It was when my then 8 year old daughter said “We thought you could plant it and help it grow forever like you help us grow” that the tears fell. For my little ones to be so in tune with me and so intuitive was worth all the rosebushes, necklaces, and Hallmark cards in the world. Each year as my Jackson&Perkins Double Delight rose bush begins to bloom, it brings back those feelings.”

“One Mother’s Day, my father-in-law’s girlfriend (who I am not terribly friendly with) gave me a lobster ‘kitchen witch’ ornament. I had never seen one before and they’re (supposedly) meant to bring good luck but, oh my, it was ugly. I wish I had a picture of it because it has to be the silliest gift I have ever received. Of course I graciously accepted it but the darn thing ended up in a box somewhere in my basement. Probably scaring off the mice.”

Gift tip when buying for a Mom you don’t know so well: Try sending an edible fruit arrangement. They are a nice change from flowers and are a special way to show you care.

“My husband is all about being practical, which is nice, because sometimes the best gifts are the gifts that you need and secretly want. I am purse connoisseur, so my absolute favorite gift was a purse hook. It seems simple, but it is the perfect way for me to take care of my bags. My least favorite gifts are ones that are common and show little thought on the part of the gift giver. Of course I would appreciate chocolate or flowers but I love gifts that show my husband really thought about me.

” The best Mother’s Day gift I have received happens to be my first. I received an original painting of a lily that has hung above my dresser ever since. I love it for many reasons, but mostly that it’s unique and one-of-a-kind, and lilies are my favorite flower. When I look at it every day it brings warmth to my heart, as a gift from my best friend and husband, as well as a constant reminder of my love for my now 7 year old daughter.
