I enjoyed attending all the 103.3 WODS free summer concerts this summer with WAR, Eddie Money and Peter Cetera. This was the second summer that we only had 3 concerts after many years of 5 concerts a summer. I enjoyed the acts we had and I go to every show, every summer these past 3-4 summers and I look forward to going again next summer. My suggestions for next summers WODS free summer concert acts include America, Kool and The Gang, Frankie Valli, Three Dog Night, The Four Tops, The O’Jays, The Manhattans, Tavares, KC and The Sunshine Band, Smokey Robinson, Donna Summer, Aerosmith and The Beach Boys.

Shaun, your suggestions for future concerts is great! I also enjoy attending the free summer concerts and I appreciate all that WODS does for their fans. I do miss seeing many of the Motown groups that you mentioned. Hopefully WODS will be able to book some of them for the free concerts next summer.

I had an awesome time seeing WAR at the Hatch Shell! It was a great show! I am so glad that JJ Wright cam out into the audience of standees and gave many of them including myself and three guests wrist bands to sit in the VIP seats. I had tried so hard to win them days before WAR came to the Hatch Shell and I got anywhere from caller 1, then busy signals, than caller 12-16 and the highest I got was caller 19. I will try my luck for Eddie Money and Peter Cetera! I can’t wait to see Eddie Money and Peter Cetera! Thank you JJ Wright! You are so kind and thoughtful!

Hey Pinepple,

You can go see the Beach Boys this summer at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on Saturday August 7th, or the South Shore Music Circus on Sunday August 8th.

Oh, wait a minute, you probably want to see them for free.

I also wish there were going to be more than 3 concerts this summer…they have been the highlight of my summers in past years…I know the sponsors are in a recession, but many of us would be willing to donate $ and help raise it…what is the approximate cost of an average concert with a known Motown group?

norman skinner

i will be overwhelmed when i hear my name mentioned by kare blake

JJ…Many of us remember the concert series at City Hall Plaza when we were very fortunate to have a concert per week sponsored 103.3. Oldies 103.3 spoiled us. I never thought I would see the concerts reduced to three though. I recognize the costs and sponsorships required to pull off these events and I appreciate all Oldies 103.3 does to ensure families can still find FREE entertainment in Boston.

That being said, Oldies 103.3 has become a station in which you can hear the same song time and again, same time, different day. I can set my watch by your record play. Want to listen to what Oldies 103.3 use to be? Tune into North Shore 104.9. My husband and I discovered this station while vacationing in Newburyport last year. We’ve been ‘streaming’ it ever since.

Just know that despite the criticism that has been expressed, many of us still appreciate all Oldies 103.3 brings to the community.

What happened to the real oldies concerts? Like Paul Rever and the raiders,Davey Jones, and other bands from the 60′s and 70′s.

I have been reading these comments and have to step in. Those that complain about the line-up and so on, must understand the process of putting these shows on. A few very important things you must realize as shows are planned months in advance: Artists/Groups AVAILABILITY, Venue SCHEDULE and COSTS!!!!

      pineapple
      May 31, 2010 10:25 pm

JJ, perhaps next year WODS can contact some of these groups earlier in the year. I’ve read one person state that those of us who were unhappy about the lineup should go to see concerts which we have to pay for. Well, perhaps there are some people like myself that can’t afford that luxury because we are unemployed. I’m quite sure you JJ, don’t have to worry about paying to see a concert because you get in for free. I realize that many of the old Motown groups have lost many members and therefore not scheduling too many concerts. If it has to do with the cost, is the station having it hard financially?

erin
May 28, 2010 4:47 pm

Sorry, but WAR is not a funk band. I know one can’t complain too much about free concerts, but these three shows bore me to tears. With all the good “oldies” music out there, this is all you could get?

    Valentine
    August 2, 2010 2:11 pm

You’re absolutely right Erin; WAR is not a funk band.

Kathy
May 27, 2010 10:55 am

People come on! You are complaining about FREE concerts and the line up. HELLO??? If you want to see someone else, go find them in concert and pay to see them!! WODS does not have to put on these concerts but they do.

The free concerts are super – Thanks…But there are some really great oldies acts who are currently touring and who still sound great!! What about Tommy James and the Shondells or Johnny Rivers or The Turtles (Flo & Eddy) or Felix Cavaliere & the Rascals or the Buckinghams or Little Anthony and the Imperials…Maybe squeeze a couple of those acts in for August!?

what about the beach boys?!

    pineapple
    May 20, 2010 4:58 am

Summer just isn’t summer without the Beach Boys. It’s a shame that WODS weren’t able to get at least a couple more good groups come to Boston. I always loved the Motown Explosion … what happened, did everyone die?

      Valentine
      August 2, 2010 2:08 pm

Pineapple, many members of the Motown groups have sadlly passed away and many are aging. That is probably the reason why WODS was not able to book some of the groups this summer. Hopefully next summer they will be able to.

Bob
May 19, 2010 2:40 pm

Just three Concerts for the season and none in August??????

    pineapple
    May 20, 2010 4:56 am

Bob, there must be budget cuts or something. It’s going to be a very boring summer in Boston. WODS must not want anyone to come down to the concerts. I know I won’t bother. Not one Motown group at all; that’s a shame. They always draw a big crowd and people have a lot of fun.

Peter Cetera is also the one who did a duet with Cher when they sang the song “Everything I do, I do it for you”.

Realisticly Eddie Money’s best song is I think I’m in love. He didn’t sing that at Earthday in 1995. I hope he will sing it this summer.

Disappointed in this line up

    Pineapple
    April 14, 2010 2:07 pm

Jan, I’m very disappointed as well in the line up this coming summer. I do like Peter Cetera and War has a couple good songs but geesh, I wonder if even WODS has budget cuts. I sure won’t waste my time to go down to the esplanade. They need to bring back some good Motown groups like The Stylistics, Four Tops, O’Jays, The Manhattans, Tavares and others. Now that’s what I’m talking about! Those groups make everyone happy and bring back a lot of good memories plus the music never dies even though some of the members do.

      Sue P
      April 18, 2010 7:22 am

I agree with Pineapple however I appreciate any FREE concert that Oldies puts on these days but the real oldies lay with in such groups as the Spinners, Tavares, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Four Tops, Tramps etc.. I am at the point in my life when I love to think back to some good music and good times honestly it helps me remember again all these artists are great but miss the Motown music

Paul
April 11, 2010 10:18 am

I love the free summer concerts but this must be a lean year. War has a couple of good songs and that’s about it. And why is Eddie Money the headliner over John cafferty. And last but not least Peter who?

    Gary
    April 11, 2010 12:31 pm

Well Paul looks like you don’t get out of the house much. Peter Cetera is one of the top singers anywhere. Peter was the lead singer for Chicago and has done well for himself as a solo artist.

      Pineapple
      April 14, 2010 2:08 pm

And you do Gary? You don’t have to be sarcastic. Maybe not everyone listened to Chicago and perhaps the person is younger.

Gary
